The world’s most expensive lizard is a leucistic Nile monitor lizard that was offered by the reptile shop, the Reptile Haven, at the end of 2003. The Nile monitor lizard comes, appropriately, from Africa and leucism is a rare condition that is caused by a complete absence of pigmentation. Unlike albinism, which only affects melanin, leucism affects pigmentation in the entire skin. However, also unlike albinism, a person or animal affected with leucism will still keep the pigmentation in their eyes.
The rarity of this condition alone is enough to make the lizard pretty pricey. In fact, the price of the most expensive lizard is $1,000,000. Although, there’s no word yet on whether or not the Reptile Haven ever sold the most expensive lizard in the world.
